Today, 18 June 2025, the Atlantic Council and the International Gas Union hosted a private roundtable discussion, on the margins of the ninth Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum, in Washington DC.

Attended by global Gas industry executives, government representatives and industry associations, the roundtable discussion, aptly entitled “Unlocking the Future of LNG”, explored the role of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a critical pillar of global energy security — enabling resilience and affordability amid great volatility and uncertainty.

Anchored by the launch of IGU’s 2025 World LNG Report, the session jointly led by IGU’s Secretary General – Menelaos (Mel) Ydreos – and by the Atlantic Council’s Chairman of the Energy Advisory Group and President at Goldwyn Global Strategies  - David Goldwyn - examined the global geopolitical implications of expanding LNG capacity, opportunities for new technologies and emerging markets, and the role of LNG in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors.

Ydreos said: “The roundtable discussion debated how the global LNG sector can navigate its regulatory and sustainability challenges while maintaining investments in new infrastructure and identify fresh areas for innovation and collaboration. Today's roundtable discussion conclusion was clear: there is ample opportunity for global LNG growth, yet there is also uncertainty that, together, we need to address and overcome."
