Global Gas Report 2025

Natural gas demand rose globally by 78 billion cubic meters (1.9%) in 2024, reaching 4,122 billion cubic meters (bcm), and is expected to continue growing in 2025 by 71 bcm (1.7%), according to the 2025 Global Gas Report by the International Gas Union (IGU) and Snam released today.

Wholesale Gas Price Survey 2025 Edition

Since the Survey inception in 2005, natural gas markets have undergone a significant transformation, with gas-on-gas (GOG) competition constantly increasing, largely at the expense of oil-price-escalation (OPE) pricing, and other forms of regulated pricing. Between 2005 and 2024, the GOG share of global Gas consumption rose from 31.5% to 49%, while the oil-price-escalation (OPE) indexed price mechanism share fell from 24% to 18.5%. Europe is dominated by GOG, with almost all of its domestic production, 80% of pipeline imports, and 78% of LNG imports priced with GOG. The natural gas market in Europe has changed dramatically over the past 20 years: in 2005, Europe’s natural gas prices were split between 78% OPE and 15% GOG, and in 2024 was 82% GOG and 18% OPE. OPE is still the largest category in most Asian countries.

2025 World LNG Report

Global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade grew by 2.4% in 2024 to 411.24 million tonnes (MT), connecting 22 exporting markets with 48 importing markets. Asia Pacific remained the largest exporting region with 138.91 MT in 2024, adding 4.10 MT over 2023. European LNG imports declined sharply, falling 21.22 MT year-on-year to 100.07 MT, driven by high storage levels at the start of the year, sluggish demand, and steady pipeline flows. However, LNG demand rebounded in Asia, with China and India posting strong year-on-year growth in spot LNG imports, driven by heatwaves, infrastructure expansions, and greater reliance on gas-for-power.
