2025 World LNG Report
Global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade grew by 2.4% in 2024 to 411.24 million tonnes (MT), connecting 22 exporting markets with 48 importing markets. Asia Pacific remained the largest exporting region with 138.91 MT in 2024, adding 4.10 MT over 2023. European LNG imports declined sharply, falling 21.22 MT year-on-year to 100.07 MT, driven by high storage levels at the start of the year, sluggish demand, and steady pipeline flows. However, LNG demand rebounded in Asia, with China and India posting strong year-on-year growth in spot LNG imports, driven by heatwaves, infrastructure expansions, and greater reliance on gas-for-power.

IGU Manifesto
As the world faces growing uncertainty, the Gas industry is essential to building more prosperous, secure and sustainable societies for everyone. Gas is essential to human progress and global growth, and its role in a just and orderly global energy transition is critical. Energy security, energy sustainability and tackling energy poverty make Gas, in all its forms, a fundamental energy source for the humanity and for our progress towards decarbonisation and methane emission mitigation. Heating, cooling, refrigeration, industrialisation, electricity, economic development and scientific progress depend on Gas.
The Role of Gas in Eastern Mediterranean Economies
As the East Mediterranean Gas sector continues to develop, there are numerous avenues for investment for foreign direct investments (FDIs) or public-private partnerships (PPPs) ranging from upstream exploration and production to midstream infrastructure projects such as pipelines and LNG terminals, and downstream activities such as energy distribution networks. Other promising regional investment opportunities are developing and deploying decarbonisation technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS).
