Anaerobic digestion is a process through which bacteria break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen. This process releases energy-rich biogas, which is relatively high in methane (CH4) content and can be captured and used as fuel. It can be enhanced either by injecting hydrogen (H2) in the reactor or by using a light electrical current to improve the CH4/CO2-ratio. There is a wide range of potential organic matter inputs that can be used as feedstock, such as food and feed industry wastes, manure and slurry, green wastes, intermediate crops and sewage sludge.
