While traditional CCUS can help with CO2 emission reduction, residual and legacy emissions would still be present, requiring carbon removal technologies such as direct air capture (DAC) of atmospheric CO2 and bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS) of biogenic CO2 to address the shortfall in reaching a net-zero scenario. Without carbon removal technologies to remove residual emissions, the path to net zero would be more complex and costly.
