The Council of IGU with a record high participation in its 74 year history has been assembled in Tianjin City/TEDA, P.R China on October 17 - 20 for the annual meetings.

More than 150 delegates from 45 countries around the world attended the meeting, which apart from traditional household issues especially featured the:

  • An expert panel discussion about the Chinese energy situation and its impact on the world gas market, and
  • Last preparations of the 23rd World Gas Conference and exhibition taking place in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on 5-9 June 2006

  • 1.Two of the most important gas nations in the world were applying for the Presidency of International Gas Union (IGU) for the Triennium 2009 - 2012: Gazprom of Russia and Petronas of Malaysia.

Both candidates were considered extremely qualified and eligible and after their respective presentations the Council decided through a secret ballot to extend this honorable position to Malaysia.

The Malaysian Candidate, Datuk Abdul Rahim HJ. Hashim is President of the Malaysian Gas Association and Vice President of Petronas.

He will now be elected Vice-President of IGU in Amsterdam next June with a view to taking over the Presidency after the following World Gas Conference in Buenos Aires in October 2009, and will end his term by organizing the 25th World Gas Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

    2. With adoption of two new Associate members, namely N.V. Gasunie of The Netherlands and Petrochina, the membership of IGU is now at 89 members representing more than 95 % of the gas produced and consumed in the world. This is why it was decided to strengthen the IGU secretariat in the future when the current term in Denmark ends in 2007.

Candidates from France, Germany and Norway applied to take over the Secretariat by the end of 2007. After their presentations the IGU Council elected by secret ballot the Norwegian candidate for this position. His name is Petter Nore, currently President of Norsk Hydro in the Russian Federation. He will take up the position of Deputy Secretary General from next June with a view to become Secretary General of IGU in the autumn of 2007.

    3. As part of the Council meeting a Panel discussion moderated by the IGU President, Mr. George H.B. Verberg with experts from China, CERA and IGU debated the actual energy developments in China and its impact on the world gas market. After their presentations they were joined in the panel by Coby van der Linde, an expert professor in energy from the Netherlands and Mr. Yoshihiro Sakamoto from Japan, President of Arabian Oil Company Holdings.

The discussion confirmed the big impact the energy development in China in the coming years will have on the energy markets in the rest of the world.

    4. The biggest event of IGU, the 23rd World Gas Conference and Exhibition takes place in Amsterdam in June next year, where the result of the work of IGU will be presented to a large number of top echelon leaders and specialists from the global gas industry.

It was confirmed to the Council that the preparations are now in place and the program and registration handbook will be distributed around the world during November 2005.

The latest World Gas Conferences have assembled more than 5.000 attendants and featured a huge ex-hibition of the gas industry.

Next year's conference in Amsterdam promises to be of at least the same importance.
