Associate Membership

Any gas entity (association, company or department) from a country represented by a Charter member can become Associate member of IGU

Associate Membership

For 71 years the IGU membership rules have only allowed one member from each country, typically the national gas association or the state company regarded to be the most representative gas organisation of the country in question.

Those rules are much too narrow for today's energy and gas industries in the different parts of the world.

The IGU Council has recently adopted new rules about membership of the Union, which introduces the possibilities of more than one representative from each country, a much broader scope of the types of organisation eligible and the notion "Associate Member"

The new rules are described in Article 4 of the IGU Articles of Association, but here are the main features:

WHO CAN BECOME ASSOCIATE MEMBER

Any gas entity (association, company or department) from a country represented by a Charter member. 

CONDITIONS FOR ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP

  • that you own tangible and/or intangible assets related to the gas chain including trading and marketing of gas.
  • that such assets appear in official and audited accounts
  • that you are capable of and willing to contribute to the development of the gas industry by active participation in IGU
  • that there are not already nine Associate Members from your country, and
  • that the IGU Council approves your candidature.

RIGHTS OF ASSOCIATE MEMBERS

As an Associate Member you have the following rights:

  • to nominate representatives to the five IGU Working Committees and the four Programme Committees as well as to other ad hoc Task Forces or Studies organised by IGU.
  • to participate in IGU Council meetings with speaking- but no voting right.
  • to nominate among the group of Associate Members up to three members from your midst, who may participate in the IGU Executive Committee meetings with speaking- and voting rights.
  • to get access to the "Members only" section of the IGU Website: www.igu.org

BENEFITS FOR ASSOCIATE MEMBERS

Through these rights you can enjoy the following benefits:

  • Networking and exchange of information with more than 500 gas professionals (executives and specialists) from more than 65 countries around the world.
  • getting the latest news about the technological and regulatory development in the gas sector in different parts of the world through participation in the IGU Committees, IGU publications and the IGU website.
  • getting access to data and case stories within the gas industry, which might save you double or superfluous work
  • having the possibility of influencing the way that gas should be promoted in the different parts of the world and the way IGU positions itself vis-à-vis local, national or supranational authorities.
  • getting your association, company or department and your commodities or services promoted world-wide
  • providing you with a good forum for personal and professional development of yourself and your key personnel.

THE DUTIES OF ASSOCIATE MEMBERS

  • to participate actively and professionally in the work of IGU in the strive to fulfil its Vision and Mission
  • to pay an annual subscription fee, which for the year 2007 is fixed by the IGU Council at EUR 4.500,-

HOW TO BECOME AN ASSOCIATE MEMBER

and send the completed signed application fom to the IGU Secretary General by letter, fax or as email with pdf enclosure. 

As indicated, you have to enclose information about your activities and your assets, preferably the annual accounts from the last two years or similar, in order to make it possible for the IGU Management to evaluate and the IGU Council to decide on your membership.
